Summary/Abstract: In this article the author analyses the idea of a rational unity, regarded from a philosophical and historical point of view from the works of the great historian A.D. Xenopol. Starting from the works, „Principii fundamentale ale istoriei” (1899) and „La théorie de l’histoire” (1908) in which Xenopol develops the theory of the evolutionary series, the author tries to present Xenopol’s concept about the evolution of the Romanian nationality and the path towards it’s national unity. The conclusion is that A.D. Xenopol has seen the fight for the Union as a historical series and the end of this series, it’s triumphant part completed by the acts of 1918, coincides with the last part of the historian’s life. So if the Union idea has become, in the Romanian time a force of idea, the one who has put it into a edifying light, as „historical series”, has become part of it, increasing because of this his own revelation.
