Summary/Abstract: European rule of law criticism towards some Central and Eastern European Member States led European institutions to put in place several instruments which aim at controlling EU countries in the name of the rule of law. The analysis of each instrument as well as of their interaction shows that their structure and workings differ depending on the institution which created them, and generally tend to increase the political and institutional power of the creating institution.
