The Preface and Forewords to Christian Gottlieb Mielcke’s Dictionary Littauisch-deutsches und Deutsch-littauisches Wörter-Buch(1800): Dating and Intertextual Connections

Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the analysis of the preface and three forewords to Christian Gottlieb Mielcke’s Littauisch-deutsches und Deutsch-littauisches Wörter-Buch (1800). They were written by cantor Mielcke (Pilkalnis), the compiler of the dictionary, priest Daniel Jenisch (Berlin), Christoph Friedrich Heilsberg (Königsberg), an assessor at the War and Domains Chamber and a school inspector of East Prussia, and philosopher Immanuel Kant (Königsberg). The research was aimed at (1) the dating of the preface and the forewords and (2) the evaluation of intertextual connections. Based on Mielcke’s letter to Heilsberg of 11 April 1799, it has been determined that encouraged by Heilsberg, Mielcke wrote the preface in April–May 1799. Intertextual analysis shows that as Kant resorted to the preface and two forewords, his foreword should be dated after 24 December 1799 (after Heilsberg’s foreword). Intertextual connections link the foreword by Jenisch with that by Mielcke’s preface and the foreword by Heilsberg with Jenisch’s foreword and Mielcke’s preface. Since Heilsberg was the initiator of Mielcke’s preface, wrote one himself, was an intermediary between Mielcke and the printing-house, maintained contacts with all the authors and was also an official with certain powers, he was in the position to enable the authors to refer to each other’s texts and thus form a discourse relevant for the use of the Lithuanian language and publishing of educational books.
