Summary/Abstract: A grammar of Lithuanian, written in Latin and published in 1737 in Vilnius without an author’s name under the title Universitas Linguarum Lituaniae, is the earliest known work to correctly describe the syllable tones of Lithuanian. However, the description of syllable tones in this grammar is not always easy to understand for a modern reader because of its unusual 18th century terminology. When this is disentangled, it becomes evident that all that the grammar testifies about Lithuanian syllable tones is fully in line with what we know about their pronunciation today.
