Summary/Abstract: The aim of the current paper is identified with the understanding of the state-society relationship in the Modern Era via the invocation and the abuse of democracy. In this framework, the core aspect of the analysis refers to whether society is placed inside or outside of the political system. The analytical conceptualization of the ‘Greek cosmosystem’ is used for the purpose of demonstrating that the narrative of Modernity dissociates society from its main role as the exclusive agent of formulation and implementation of politics. From this point of view, citizenship is re-defined under the lens of its one-sided adherence to the idea of its exclusion from the legislative and the executive. This gap between society and politics indicates that the former upholds the role of private/individual in the full range of the intra-state structure operation.
