Summary/Abstract: The subject of the study is the motivational salience of the students and cadets in higher education institutions, the relation with their performance in the training process and methods used to motivate learners in the field of security and defence. The objects of the study are learners at the National Military University in Bulgaria. The study began in 2012 and ended in 2019. Currently in 2021, its results are implemented by the management at the National Military University. The collection of the necessary information for the study was carried out by a combination of research methods. The main method used was the empirical statistical study conducted in a real environment. Experts with a major academic and command experience were attracted and provided feedback on presentation of learners in the training process and methods used to motivate learners. Large volume of literature sources was studied in the period from 2002 to 2019 in order to find an appropriate methodology and the research to be scientifically substantiated and conducted in accordance with the scientific requirements.
