Summary/Abstract: The article studies the reasons for and the different forms of civil society actors’ participation in the healthcare system. That was a dense practice in the period between the years of 1878 and 1944. The re-installment of the civil society after 1989 saw rebuilding of some of those previously existing forms of interaction and the introduction of some new. But there is still one significant absence – the possibility for civil society organizations to deliver directly healthcare services.
