Summary/Abstract: This article describes the use of information technology in shaping the key competences of students, an issue of significant interest in modern education. The conducted research focuses on supporting the process of shaping students’ key competences with the use of information technology (ICT) tools in biology classes for upper secondary and post-primary schools (stage IV education) during lessons on genetic engineering, biotechnology and metabolic processes. The project “Education Strategy for Sustainable Development” provides guidance on the use of learning solutions that move away from the exclusive provision of information to participatory learning. Information technology, in its broadest sense, should play an important role in this respect, making it possible to work with information available on the Internet, for example. The use of ICT tools can increase the perception of conveyed information, allow for a deeper understanding of the interdependencies between facts and prepare students for life in a rapidly changing world. In biology education, an important role of ICT is to enable students to learn about natural facts and processes in ways that go beyond the possibilities of traditional teaching. Broad access to information about achievements in the biological sciences requires competences in information literacy and scientific literacy.
