Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the early acquisition of Bulgarian consonant clusters in word-initial, -medial and -final position. Before mastering the target-language clusters, children reduce the two consonant positions to single ones coinciding with the first (C1) or the second position (C2) (or with neither of them). Such consonant reductions are discussed in the light of the sonority sequencing principle taking into consideration both universal and language-specific aspects of language development. The empirical data are excerpts from the spontaneous speech of five longitudinally studied monolingual Bulgarian children aged 1;6 to 3;0 years.
