Summary/Abstract: In this work, the changes of the exam structure and the results of the analysis of the state mature Geography examinations from 2016/2017 are presented. In the examination the percentage of tasks examining higher cognitive processes was increased, compared to the tasks examining knowledge of facts. The aim of such approach is to increase the quality level of lecturing and the level of knowledge, skills and competencies every student should reach at the end of his/her secondary education, by which changes in the complete educational system would be incited. Geography is an elective subject at the state mature with which the participants who wish to enroll the Faculty of Geography get their scores. The scope of the examination is selective, i.e. with it the participants with the best results in this field are distinguished. By accentuating the examination of higher cognitive processes we try to increase the predictive value of this examination and based on the results, distinguish the participants who will be most successful in their studies. In this work, examples of tasks were shown which examine higher levels of knowledge and geographical thinking. Research was done on the sample of 383 participants. Qualitative and quantitative methods of work were adopted. The results show that based on this examination structure we can distinguish the most successful students in the subject of Geography. This research contributes to the development of the educational Geography which explains the legitimacy of acquiring geographical knowledge and skills, as well as the students’ achievements which are the base of lifelong learning, while some of the insights can contribute to the improvement of the learning process and teaching Geography.
