Summary/Abstract: Contemporary societies characterize cultural, national and religious heterogeneity, which implies recognition of the value of all cultures and the understanding of multiculturalism as a universal phenomenon. Despite declarative support for the principles of multiculturalism and interculturalism, many of the European countries have not sufficiently achieved these principles in the educational system. Not explaining the different dimensions of multiculturalism (historical, political, economic, etc.), the authors start with the cultural and structural aspect of multicultural education and focus on the possibilities of institutionalizing the principles of multicultural education. In order to ensure adequate participation in the educational system, it is not the social recognition of multiculturalism, but also of the educational recognition of cultural equality, diversity and the need for cooperation between members of different cultural, national and religious groups. Given that the school is a basic educational institution, the authors believe that schools are the place of development of individual cultural identities, as well as the encounter of different cultures and the development of multicultural competences of students. This paper challenges multiculturalism in upbringing and education of approaches from an institutional point of view, such as the example of Catholic primary schools, pointing to the opportunities and needs of founding primary schools in which students’ personal identity and their multicultural competencies are built.
