Fénelon Or Naruszewicz? Inspirations and Textual References in Leszek Biały, książę polski by Michał Dymitr Krajewski

Summary/Abstract: The author analyzes the relations between The Adventures of Telemachus by François Fénelon and Leszek Biały, książę polski by the Polish novelist. On the basis of her analyze, she claims that the thesis of the Polish novel’s complete dependence on French pattern should be verified. In fact, Krajewski uses only some of Fénelon’s narrative schemes which he modifies and adapts to his own needs. His novel, however, shows a deep relationship with Historyja narodu polskiego by Adam Naruszewicz. The author demonstrates that Krajewski edited and included large fragments of Adam Naruszewicz’s text in his own novel. As a consequence, various fragments of Leszek Biały are rather a recast of the second book of the fourth volume of Naruszewicz’s historical work than an adaptation of Fénelon.
