Summary/Abstract: The article traces formation of the notion of modality in Arabic linguistics (from medieval Arabic modal theories within logic to modern linguistic views) and the problem of scientific research approaches to this category. It is shown that difficulties in Arabic modal studies, related to different approaches to the definition of modality, become more complex because of searching of an appropriate Arabic term for this category.
