Summary/Abstract: The paper traces the relation between the Romanian avant-garde poet, Ilarie Voronca, and the theme of technological progress, which was essential in the context of Avant-garde movements. Either in his theoretical articles or in his literary work, he is fascinated by the modernist myth of the new, by the scientific and technological revolution, by the new means of transportation and ways of transmitting information. He distances himself defiantly from traditional literature, either by introducing technical terms into the literary imaginary, as a means to undermine the stiltedness of art for art’s sake, to freshen up the predominantly mineral and vegetal vocabulary and create striking collocations of words, or by turning his literary manifestos, on the model of the Italian Futurist Marinetti, into veritable odes to celebrate the dynamism and speed of modern life. By cultivating the aesthetics grounded in shock imagery, in the revelation of the quotidian fact and purposefulness, Ilarie Voronca aims not so much to express movement as to contain it. The dissolution of natural forms sits alongside the apology of mechanicist thinking, resulting in a new cult, that of modern life, of urbanism.
