Summary/Abstract: The temporary capital had from 6 to 15 working manufactures of chocolate and candies at different times. However, only two of them, the “Ashkinazi“ (“Kodimo“) and the “Tilka“ could be distinguished for a variety of their assortment. The third, a bit larger manufactory, the “Abrikos“ was more famous for its halva production. The “Ashkinazi“ (“Kodimo“) tried to compete against the “Tilka“ in Kaunas, but the only “Tilka“ was able to compete with “Birutė“ and “Rūta“, the enterprises of chocolate and candies that were established in Šiauliai at that time. Both “Ashkinazi“ (“Kodimo“) and the “Tilka“ were well-known for their ingenious publicity, as well as for the good-looking colourful labels of their production. The enterprises were very successful at participating in different expositions both in Lithuania and abroad. At that time the majority of the owners of the manufactures in Kaunas were Jewish by origin. In the development of the “Tilka“ exclusive role was played by the brothers Boris and Saliamon Kaganow, also, by its long-lived director Alexander Kaminskas, who was a Lithuanian Russian by origin. Unfortunately, the efforts of Lithuanians in order to merge into the manufacture of chocolate and candies were short-termed and unsuccessful. The enterprises of chocolate and candies in the temporary capital nurtured the traditions of chocolate production dating back to the nineteenth century. The executives of the manufactories used to participate in the public life of Kaunas. Moreover, they were engaged in charitable activities. Unfortunately, the uniqueness of Kaunas sweet industry was ruined due to the Soviet occupation. The only “Tilka“ working under other names, managed to keep its previous assortment for some time during the Soviet period.
