Summary/Abstract: In August 2021 the Taliban came back to power in Afghanistan, after almost two decades of democratization efforts in this country. This article investigates the causes of such a failure. Afghanistan cannot be compared with Germany or Japan at the end of the second World War, as the total defeat of the enemy was never achieved. The foreign assistance to democracy in Afghanistan was weak and not coordinated. Elections were organized but they were never fully competitive and they were frauded in some cases. Widespread corruption was the main cause for the failure of democratization in Afghanistan. What will be the future of democracy in Afghanistan remains to be seen, but the current developments are not encouraging.
