Summary/Abstract: Elections are the foundation of representative democracy, and its functioning depends on the proper composition of the set of rules under which the mandates of the people's representatives are assigned. Although there are a variety of electoral systems around the world, with each country choosing the system it considers best suited to its specific circumstances, they can be grouped into two broad categories: majoritarian systems and proportional systems. Some countries have opted for a mixed electoral system, obtained by combining the two systems. The electoral system used to elect the members of the two Chambers of the Romanian Parliament belongs to the category of proportional systems. This article analyses the effects of two important dimensions of the electoral system used for parliamentary elections, namely the size of circumscription and the electoral formula, with a focus on the analysis of the results of the 2020 Romanian Senate elections.
