Summary/Abstract: This paper provides a brief review of literature which explored recent developments in digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) from a criminological perspective. Particularly, the article is interested in providing a criminological analysis of algorithmic risk assessment tools, potentially utilised by the criminal justice system. It is proposed that despite their scientific mantra, results emerging from risk-assessment tools should not be taken as dogma. Rather than revealing an objective reality, such tools are seen as constituents of penal dangerousness which ultimately run the risk of casting probationers in the Malopticon.
