Summary/Abstract: The activity of Cluj musician Vasile Herman (1929-2010) combines his creative interests with his research endeavors. His five symphonies are followed by a conclusive theoretical study which opens up opportunities for the analysis of his works. As we learn from his theoretical study, his interest in this genre is focused on methods of designing the symphonic cycle, the role of the sonata form in the dramaturgy of the whole, along with certain stylistic aspects that have become his personal signature (thematic and language elements, organization of the musical discourse, writing techniques). This paper proposes an analysis of Herman's symphonies in the light the conclusions formulated in his theoretical study, which provide the key to a deeper understanding of his works.
