Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the use of alternative communication by speech therapists and the presentation of its concepts. The theory of the act of speaking and the basic concepts of communication are reconstructed. The perspective of an intellectually disabled child and the basic criteria for classifying the phenomena accompanying alternative communication are discussed. The latter part of the article contains the differentiation between alternative and augmentative communication systems. The aim of the article is to systematize the knowledge about alternative and augmentative communication (AAC).
