Summary/Abstract: The canonical reflection on the meaning of the title words of the paper, also contained in canon 1134 CIC, leads us towards the prophetical message of article 1535 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The article is functioning as a “transmission belt” of a crucial part of the Second Vatican Council on de sacramento matrimonii. Especially the last sentence of the article (“Christian spouses are fortified and, as it were, consecrated for the duties and dignity of their state by a special sacrament”) triggers a question regarding the place of this section in the doctrine—implicitly referring to an important formula from the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church: velut Ecclesia domestica—the place that it occupies in the normative depictions of the 1983 Code of Canon Law and the 1990 Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches. In the attempt of an aspectual examination of the issue, the author acknowledges as indispensible the realization of two research “steps” in the chapters entitled: (1) Coherence and complementary character of the Sacrament of Matrimony doctrine sources, and (2) Christian spouses are consecrated for the duties of the domestic Church.
