Summary/Abstract: Naskh (abrogation), is one of the most discussed areas within the origins of tafsîr (interpretation) in the modern period. In the classical period, there was an agreement in its existence but not in its number, whereas in the modern period it has become a controversial subject. While the number of the abrogated verses in the classical period was expressed in hundreds, this number decreased to single digits in the modern period. One of the names that come to mind at this point is the Indian scholar Shāh Walī Allāh al-Dihlawī (d. 1176/1762). Ad-Dihlawî, mentioned the subject of abrogation in his original work in the origins of interpretation titled al-Fawzu’l-Kabîr fî Usûli’t-Tafsîr, and reduced the number of the abrogated verses to 5, whereas this number was increased to twenty-one in as-Suyûtî’s (d. 911/1505) work called al-İtkân. In modern studies on naskh, the verses that Dihlawî accepted as abrogated came to the fore and the subject became controversial. This study is based on the work titled al-ʿAwnu’l-Kabîr Şarhu’l-Fawzi'l-Kabîr written by the Indian scholar Saʿīd Ahmad Pālanpurī on ad-Dihlawî’s work al-Fawzu’l-Kabîr. Pālanpurī analyses here the point of view of ad-Dihlawî to abrogation and discusses his approach regarding the abrogated verses. At the same time, this study also gives an idea about the approach to abrogation of the Deoband school, which adopts a Hanafî-Sunnî line in the Indian subcontinent, where the school of Qur’anism, which is the standard bearer of those who reject abrogation in the Qur’an in the modern period.
