Summary/Abstract: Briefly after Cyprus was ceded to the British Empire in 1878, the Greek Cypriots have raised the enosis (union with Greece) demand. Since the British have insistently refused those demands, the Greek Cypriot underground organization EOKA has launched an armed struggle against the British colonial rule in 1955. Within short time, it has targeted the Turkish Cypriot community as well, opposing vigorously the union with Greece. Upon this, Turks have established their own underground organizations for their safety. However, those organizations have remained incapable in retaliating against the EOKA. Turning to 1957, the British government, who had taken strict measures against the EOKA before, has begun softening its policy and showing signs of reaching an agreement with Greek Cypriots and Greece. Concerned about their own future, Turkish Cypriots were forced to seek for a more effective underground organization. To meet that need, the Turkish Resistance Organization (TRO) has been formed by Mustafa Kemal Tanrisevdi, Dr. Burhan Nalbantoglu and Rauf Raif Denktash in November 1957. Until August 1958 when it has been taken over by Turkey, the TRO, has become an organization with determined political aims, organized throughout the island and which had strong links with other Turkish Cypriot organizations.
