Summary/Abstract: Abstract: This text examines members of the intelligentsia as characters in stories of the 1930s and the early 1940s. Characters are grouped in three types – the dreamer, the pessimist and the reconciled – on the basis of their thoughts, emotions, moods and reactions. All of them are conscious of the meaninglessness to the repetitiveness of days, but react in different ways – some are dreamers, have ideals and aspirations to follow, others are constantly doubting and wander in search of meaning, while others still are almost immersed in everyday life, despite their desire to change it.
