THE IMPACT OF THE SOCIOLINGUISTIC FACTOR OF PRESTIGE ON THE USE OF THE LABIODENTAL ALLOPHONE [V] IN MODERN-DAY SPANISH

Summary/Abstract: Abstract: In the present article we examine the influence of the sociolinguistic factor prestige on the usage of the labiodental allophone [v] in contemporary Spanish. Following dephonologization, /v/ has ceased to be a part of the phonemic inventory of Spanish. Similarly, [v] no longer characterizes the standard norm of Spanish variants. Still, the labiodental allophone is found in certain variants and dialects of the language. Thus we examine variants and dialects of Spanish such as the ones in Mexico, Chile, USA, and Catalonia to confirm the existence of a positive correlation between prestige and [v]-allophone usage.
