Summary/Abstract: The Habsburg Empire domination of the Romanian province of Oltenia during the first half of the 18th century is considered to be the first contact of Romanians with the structures of Western European type of public administration. The case ofHabsburg rule in Oltenia came to be seen as a typical instance of conflict between the forces of progress and modernization and a supposed resistance of Romanians to such processes. There is no attested intention of Habsburg authorities to modernize the newly acquired provinces, but a consistent effort of drawing money through taxes and ensuring a loyal local administration.
