Summary/Abstract: The basic characteristics of plural societies are deep divisions along ethnic, religious, linguistic or ideological lines. Due to such a social structure, and in some cases of war history, it is quite difficult to establish a functional and democratic order. The paper analyzes the effect of the consociational model of democracy in the Western Balkans. The author argues that consociation is successful, given that the goal of consocial arrangements is to establish and maintain peace in societies affected by conflict. Although there are certain flaws inherent in consociational democracy, any more radical deflection from the existing model can lead to a resumption of war conflicts.
