Summary/Abstract: In officially bilingual contexts such as some cantons in Switzerland, the possibility of offering learners a school programme in two languages is regularly questioned. Between the representations of the society, the position of politicians and the potential divergent opinions of the public and the teachers, the implementation of bilingual programme is a long and sensitive process. This paper proposes to study a range of conditions, from the political, didactic and societal spheres, by identifying the role of the institutions, the teachers and the learners. All this takes place in a well-defined context, holding naturally strong cultural and identity values.
