Summary/Abstract: The study explores geographical folk names in Hungarian which have been recorded in the past five years. In addition to presenting the basic form of these geographical names, which is the regular practice in similar studies, in this paper we also focus on the spelling of the adjectival variants of these names and thereby draw attention to numerous orthographic problems which arise with respect to a number of geographical terms which are mixed in nature in that the initial segment of the complex geographical name originates from Serbian. The orthography of such mixed names has received little attention so far and therefore in this paper we suggest possible guidelines for the spelling of these mixed formations. The geographical folk names addressed in this study are classified into the following thematic groups: geographical names appearing in names of bodies of water, geographical names referring to land surfaces, geographical names referring to seabed topography, geographical names referring to plants, and geographical names designating an area or landscape. The goal of the paper is draw the attention of current and future teachers of Hungarian and of Hungarian linguists in the Carpathian Basin who study geographical names to the many issues that arise relating to the orthography of geographical folk names in Hungarian in a minority context.
