Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this contribution is to evaluate the Hittite verb pukk-, pugga- ‘to be hateful, to be repulsive, to be unpleasant’ that, according to the opinion here presented, would reflect our conceptual schemes, and to explain the semantic shift undergone by a polysemic PIE root *bhewg(h)- ‘to bend, to run away’ taking into account some theoretical prerequisites of cognitive linguistics. Within this framework it is possible to confirm Kronasser’s etymological interpretation, also considering a further possibility, advanced by the scholar, of a motivation due to linguistic contact with Akkadian.
