Summary/Abstract: The research of temperance from a peratological perspective is an analysis of the desire to stay below the limit. Having as benchmarks both the socio-political and ethical issues that sophrosyne has received throughout history (from Homer to Plato), but also the meaning offered by Plato and Aristotle – from a philosophical perspective – the research of temperance as an aspiration to reach the limit (and staying below it) implies to find the fair measure, both in terms of (cosmic) harmony and intimation of the favorable moment to achieve the balance with the help of phronesis. As such, sophrosyne, going, historically, through changes of meaning, without losing its semantic core, ends up being secularized in the time of Plato and Aristotle, who revalue the concept through the philosophical stake of its relation with wisdom, which is the tee to achieve balance, harmony and conceptualizing the limit as a fulfilment.
