Summary/Abstract: The National Puppet Theater of Târgu Mureș presented for the first time the puppet show entitled Vasilache in the countryside, directed by Pál Antal. The screenplay written by Ana Predescu and Nela Stroescu, is the only surviving memory of the play, along with a few photos. In the early 1960s the Vasilache in the countryside puppet show was played in various puppet theaters in the country: Craiova, Iași and Pitești. In the repertoire of the puppet theater of Cluj Napoca, the show was called Vasilache in new clothes (Vasilache în haine noi), the playwrights were again Ana Predescu and Nela Stroescu. These shows are not mentioned in the records of puppet theater archives, which makes the surviving documentation about the show from Târgu Mureș more important. After puppetry became institutionalized in Romania, only a handful of puppet theaters staged Vasilache-shows, and none left behind any surviving materials. On the other hand, the contemporary media mentions that Vasilache rejoices in new clothes for the obvious results and is trying his wings in the new socialist environment.
