Summary/Abstract: The twentieth century collection was created by merging two earlier collections: the Workers’ Movement and War of National Liberation collection and the Socialist Development collection. The former was set up in the mid 1950s, while the latter followed only later. The Workers’ Movement and War of National Liberation collection consists of two thematic groups; the workers’ movement from the late 19th century to 1941 and the War of National Liberation (1941-1945). The formation of the Socialist Development collection was initially part of the latter, becoming a collection in its own right only in 1979. Sarajevo has lived through many difficult times over the centuries, but there can be no doubt that the 1992-1995 siege and the ravages inflicted on the city were one of the hardest, during which the Sarajevo Museum was not spared either. The damage was not only to its dependencies; in 1993 the Sarajevo Museum lost its own building, which it had occupied since 1954, and the collections also suffered. Braving the dangers, the Museum staff risked their own lives to rescue and safeguard as many of the exhibits as they could. It proved impossible, in these circumstances, to rescue everything, and both collections suffered certain losses. The two collections were merged in the late 1990s to create the twentieth century collection, consist of documents, photographs, artefacts, and a set of arms and armaments dating from the 1992-1995 siege of Sarajevo.
