Summary/Abstract: The Despić House is a dependency of the Sarajevo Museum. Originally dating from the 17th century, it was enlarged and altered at various times, during three different periods. It presents the lifestyle of a wealthy merchant family, the Despić family, which donated it to the City together with another property, housing the Museum of Literature and the Performing Arts. It is also regarded as the precursor of modern theatre, for it was here that the first theatre performances were held by the Despić brothers as entertainment for their guests. The most notable member of the family was Makso Despić, haznadar (treasurer) during the Ottoman period and a city councillor during the Austro-Hungarian period.
