Summary/Abstract: The article researches the issue of the modern interpretation with the characteristic contradictions of such an ambiguous historical event of the end of the XVIII century as the travel of Katerina II to the New Russia and Crimea, starting with the emergence of this idea, the preparation and its implementation. The paper covers the important role of Potyomkin as the “ideologist” and the main organizer of this event. It reveals its internal and external contexts. It is concluded about the positivity of the joining of the South Russian territories the Russian Empire.
