Summary/Abstract: In the context of Hungary's purchase of a port and concession in Trieste, the author seeks to answer the question of whether it was worth for Hungary having its own seaport. This study examines how much of Hungary's foreign trade turnover by tariff class was generated by its own port in a market environment similar to the present one, in the period 1896-1914. For the most important commodities of Fiume's trade, the author also explores the role of the Hungarian merchant navy. The study can contribute to the development of economic knowledge of the 'port-sea' trade through economic history.
