Summary/Abstract: An important element of specialist language education is the achievement of competences in the field of understanding, and the efficient use of, terminology in both the native and foreign language, supported by basic knowledge of the given field. The aim of this article is to present those features of the Ukrainian and Polish legal languages which are important in the teaching and learning of the professional language. It highlights the synonymy in Ukrainian and Polish legal terminology, as well as inter-linguistic equivalence, phenomena which are important from the point of view of the translation competences acquired during the course, as well as the role of the textual context and specialist knowledge in acquiring terminology. These are areas of professional education that are of particularly difficulty for learners. The grammatical-translation and communicative aspects of teaching, illustrated in the sample exercises, are discussed, taking into account the similarities and differences between the two terminological systems, and the reasons for such are indicated. This study was conducted on the basis of Ukrainian and Polish legal texts (the Civil Code, Family and Guardianship Code, Personal Data Protection Act), using a descriptive-analytical and comparative method.
