Summary/Abstract: This article takes up the issue of the approach towards nominative categories in the teaching of Polish as a foreign language, based on the example of the category of number of the noun in Polish. The author refers to cognitive linguistic theory, which assumes that the distinction of the category of number has a conceptual basis. She argues that, in striving for the effective use of this category by a student in a new language, emphasis should be placed not only on mastering its morphological elements. Since nominative categories have been shaped in a given language primarily as an expression of its specific, conceptual categorisation of the world, learning it requires a partial suspension of the categorisation of extra-linguistic phenomena to which the student is accustomed in their own language, and migration to the world of the conceptual organisation of L2. This issue is discussed based on the example of plurale tantum and singulare tantum nouns, which, in this respect, may have a different status in different languages.
