Summary/Abstract: The army plays a key role in maintaining the British rule in India. Therefore, the studying of said army is of interest not only from the country’s political governance point of view, but also in regards to the living conditions in the empire. The study examines some aspects of the lifestyle of the military class in colonial India, in regards not only to the professional routine, but placed in a broader social framework. The main issues to be addressed are the financial situation of the officers and soldiers and their status, the relationship between them, etc. Despite the advantages offered by the choice of this profession for both the British military and the Indian soldiers, the unequal position of the local population representatives in the army is also evident.
