Summary/Abstract: Based on a wide variety of archival sources and studies, which analyze the economic development of the Bulgarian lands before 1878, the study seeks to outline some aspects of the merchants’ everyday life. It gives an idea about the merchants’ profession, the characteristics and the skills necessary for it. It also emphasizes the merchants’ opportunity to communicate with people of different cultures. The study pays attention to the road network and vehicles, to the novelties related to the Balkan’s everyday life of the 1850s – 1870s. It discusses the trading process, the risks and the obstacles that slow it down or totally prevent it.
