Summary/Abstract: In the 1940s, two out of every five inhabitants of the Komi Republic were Gulag prisoners. It is entirely due to the exploitation of these modern-era slaves that traffic infrastructure and the mining industry were built in the region. Almost all of the towns there were founded as labour camps, now commemorated by numerous memorials.
