Summary/Abstract: The text offers a summary and assessment of anthropological research, concepts, and theories that relate to the space of the Balkans. The authors focus on the international intellectual community, which draws from methodological and theoretical stances of social and cultural anthropology and creates a specific academic tradition, the results of which are published mostly in English. Attention is also paid to forms of cooperation between the local scholarly traditions (ethnology, ethnography, and folkloristics) and social and cultural anthropology, but also to differences between these traditions. The authors attempt to place the results of field research and theoretical concepts developed in connection with this geographical space into the context of anthropological research of Western societies, primarily those of Europe.
