Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes synonymous relations in the German language by means of the new corpus-linguistic methods. This analysis concerns mainly the recognition of reciprocal semantic relations among the elements of the concrete synonymous groups, their syntactic characteristics or their stylistic relevance. The possibility of fast access to massive amounts of data derived from very large corpora facilitates the lexicological work and stands in a direct relation to lexicography. The paper originates from the author’s diploma work Zur neuen Bestimmung von synonymischen Reihen mithilfe der korpuslinguistischen Tools (Related Collocation Profiles, Semantic Proximity Model, Self-Organizing Maps, Contrasting Near-Synonyms) [A corpus based research of synonymous groups (Related Collocation Profiles, Semantic Proximity Model, Self-Organizing Maps, Contrasting Near-Synonyms)]. In the main part of the research selected substantive and adjective synonymous pairs and groups have been analyzed. Further, lexical feature maps have been demonstrated as practical didactic tools in the teaching process (demonstrated on the word fairy-tale). The diploma work dealt with two conceptions of synonymy, namely, with the theoretical frame by Josef Filipec and, with the corpus based view of lexical relations. Filipec features especially the need of analyzing synonyms in their, i.e., contextual usage. This view can be developed further, although on a different theoretical base, by means of corpus-based methods which can enrich current lexicographic practice.
