Summary/Abstract: The article tries to point out the difficulties of an efficient meaning-mediation of near synonyms in foreign language teaching on the background of the insufficient lexicographical elaboration of paradigmatic-syntagmatical interrelationships between lexical units. Attention is paid to the new corpus linguistic tool SOM (Self Organizing Maps) that was developed at the Institute for the German Language (Institut für Deutsche Sprache) in Mannheim. Its principle is presented on the example of German synonymous adjectives unedlich and endlos.
