Summary/Abstract: Since the establishment of the Lisbon Strategy, the European Union has been trying to achieve the target of 3% of expenditure on research and development in GDP in the whole EU. According to the Strategy Europe 2020, this should be reached in 2020, which will result in the competitiveness of the member states’ economies with regard to such countries as the USA or Japan. The purpose of this article is to identify and analyse the trends in changes of expenditure on research and development in GDP of European Union member states, as well as an assessment of the deviations of expenditure on R&D in 2010 from the targets set in the Strategy Europe 2020.
