Summary/Abstract: Two epitaphs of bishops of Faras of the ninth/tenth century display agonistic termsused to describe the life and the person of the deceased. The author discusses thebackground of this linguistic phenomenon and argues that the agonistic terminology might have reached Christian Nubia through the late antique ascetic and monastic literature.
