Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes main features of congressional midterm elections in the United States. It addresses the issues of why presidential party tends to lose seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, how the results of midterm congressional elections determine the afterwards political process and what are the differences between campaigning in the presidential and midterm electoral cycles. The paper also reflects on the 2018 midterm elections, discussing what type of midterm election models – normal, preparatory, calibrating or innovative – the 2018 midterm fits best.
