Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to present the way in which the model of intercultural communicative competence developed by Michael Byram can be integrated in teaching Romanian as a foreign/ second language from an intercultural perspective. Firstly, I proposed a series of terminological clarifications to differentiate intercultural communicative competence from some related concepts, such as multiculturalism, bicultural identity, pluricultural competence, etc. and I synthesized the implications of replacing the standard of the native speaker with that of the intercultural speaker. Finally, I offered some practical suggestions for the development of the five components of intercultural communicative competence: intercultural attitudes (savoir être), knowledge (savoirs), skills of comparison, interpreting and relating (savoir comprendre), skills of discovery and interaction (savoir apprendre/ faire) and critical cultural awareness (savoir s'engager).
