Summary/Abstract: Christmas marks the beginning of the new year. In the Christian tradition, Christmas is the day when the birth of Jesus, the Son of God, is celebrated. It’s a day of peace and joy. Croatian traditional culture knows the richness of Christmas customs and rituals. Christmas customs show the atmosphere of Christmas in homes, families, villages and towns. The holiday mood and commemorative songs express joy. Some of the traditional features of Christmas are yule logs, grain straw, nativity scene, Christmas tree, candles, first visitor rule, „collegiate“ commemorative singing, Christmas table. In the Trogir area, these characteristics are faithfully preserved and cherished. The custom of the first guest at Christmas time contains archetypal elements. Grain straw lingered longer as a sign of Christmas from yule logs. By entering straw into the house, the celebration of Christmas began. Yule logs was placed on the hearth on Christmas Eve and had to mound sometimes until the feast of the Three kings. Christmas greenery is an old custom, and Christmas tree tanning begins at the beginning of the 20th century. Regarding the custom of Christmas candles, in the Trogir area it was known to say: „Hardly home on Christmas Eve dawn does not burn.“. On Christmas Day, there was a morning Mass, and on the way back, the housemates were waiting for a prepared table and a peaceful family atmosphere.
