Summary/Abstract: Historic parks and gardens represent complex monuments in which vegetation and especially woody species, at least in the case of Romanian parks and gardens, predominates. In these spaces defined by both cultural and natural values, plantations and the choice of the selection of plants were not accidental, and the motivation and history behind each decision regarding the green components of a park or garden represents a very important topic, so far little researched in Romania, necessary for the understanding of the evolution of these outdoor spaces, and also for their proper management, conservation and future restoration. Thus, the following paper will present a series of aspects regarding characteristics of plantations in public parks and gardens, national and international fashions regarding the use of different species of plants and the reasons for choosing to use certain species, and especially trees, in the municipal parks established between 1830-1916 south and east of the Carpathians.
